Yeah. And unlike a Walmart supervisor, a porn producer at least talks nice before they get fucked.

When I hear the arguments about how the porn industry exploits its workers, I don't hear anything that isn't also true of Walmart.

I think your friend is right that we should be starting with local groups and networks. And I think that those people who have the boot most firmly on their neck need to be centered and driving radical movements, because they are the ones who can see things most clearly. That means that the more privilege you have, the more you need to learn to step back. This group clearly does not believe any of those things.

As to having nothing to lose, I don't think you realize how time consuming and emotionally exhausting it is to butt your head up against people who aren't ready to hear what you are saying. My time is better spent building the kinds of relationships of trust in my community that any radical change will have to be based on.

Most importantly, related to both of those things, I shouldn't be having to insert myself. Just like I do not expect the people in my community to come to me or to follow my agenda. I go out and find them and find out how I can support what they are already doing.

And you are right. We all struggle with this one.

This is one of those rare and brilliant blog posts that will stay with me for the rest of my life. It makes a huge difference to be reminded of this, and I thank you.
Malcolm X was saying much the same thing, and many other people have, but how easy it is to forget, and reconfigure your shame as 'pride'. Too proud to accept help, to proud to say you're poor, or that you married the wrong person, or that you've been abused, or just that you're horny! But it is really shame that keeps us from sharing ourselves, and this is how the minority of sociopaths who feel no shame keep manipulating us. You're damn right, it needs to be redistributed. I want to talk about this with everyone I know. I think there probably is no human being living who hasn't been the victim of this at some point.
Again, thank you.

I'm involved in local activism with a good group, but see the need for broad and sustained organization. Sounds like you are the same there. But, what do you think you should do about it? At best I can read your comment as saying "hey this IOPS thing is going about this good thing badly." What should they do/have done differently then?
For example, a friend of mine said that if the building blocks of IOPS were pre-existing local groups and networks, rather than individuals, maybe it would have been (could still be?) more diverse and dynamic from the start. Agree/disagree? Or should we just not form a sustained, broad effort because there's no way it can avoid these faults? Or not do that until some unspecified time in the future when we'll be ready? If you don't advocate a better way, isn't it a self-fulfilling prophesy that we won't get what we want here?
As for fighting up through an organization, isn't it a bit different in this case? The organization doesn't really exist yet, and at the time of writing the site had barely been set going. Then they should slash and burn all the work as soon as they see the crappy initial gender balance a week or two later? It is what you make it at this stage, isn't it? I guess that, while I sympathize with the post more than perhaps it seems from these questions, and think maybe IOPS could have got some groundwork better worked out, I don't see what there is to lose at this super-early stage by pitching in a few forum comments and tweets and seeing what happens. If it ends up the way you fear in a Year's time, well it won't have sapped that much energy. If it doesn't, well then we have a super brilliant new tool, yay.

I assume that many of those people would make different decisions if all those nice toys they got didn't come with status.
